The fire test - Real silk vs. synthetic silk
Mulberry Silk - The Burn Test
The most exciting way to determine whether it is real silk or synthetic silk is by doing the burn test. Silk burns in a very specific way.
Like hair, silk is a natural, protein-based fiber. When silk burns, it does so slowly and unevenly, leaving a light ash and a smell reminiscent of burnt hair. Artificial silk, on the other hand, melts and burns like plastic, making it easy to distinguish between genuine and synthetic materials.
NOTE - Do not burn your new expensive silk pillowcase or duvet cover! Instead, ask your supplier if they can send you a smaller piece of material so you can test the product yourself - or have them film the difference.
