Silk pillowcases - Truths and myths

Do silk pillowcases benefit skin and hair?

Silk pillowcases are known to have a host of beauty benefits, such as fewer wrinkles, shinier hair and healthier ends. But can silky pillowcases really be the way to smoother skin and healthier hair?

In short, yes - silk pillowcases do a difference. At Cillouettes, we have tested different types of silk pillowcases over a long period of time to arrive at the best quality. Our friends and family were also very curious about the material, and they now all swear to sleep on silk pillowcases.

Of course, silk pillowcases are not a cure-all for all beauty problems, but they certainly have some beneficial effects. We have researched and created an insight into which beauty benefits you can actually expect from a silk pillowcase - and which are just speculation.

Do silk pillowcases prevent frizzy hair?

Yes! Thanks to the smooth texture of the silk, the hair glides over it without any friction. This means you'll be less likely to wake up with frizzy hair or tangles. Cotton, on the other hand, tends to tangle the hair, so you wake up with decidedly "morning hair". You avoid this by sleeping on silk. Therefore, silk pillowcases have been used by women with textured hair for many years. In this way, they have been able to maintain styles for a longer time without frizz.

Can silk pillowcases prevent wrinkles?

It may sound too good to be true, but it can be. The silk has an extremely smooth surface with very little friction. This means less drag on the skin than with a regular cotton pillowcase. When you sleep on your side, you can experience so-called sleep wrinkles. Fewer of these will occur if you change your pillowcase to silk. Studies show that friction by turning and turning causes folds in the skin, but a silky smooth surface can reduce these in the long run.

Do silk pillowcases keep the skin on the face hydrated?

True. The smoothness of silk means that the material is less likely to absorb moisture from the skin. With silk, the skin is thus kept nice and hydrated without removing the valuable moisture. This makes silk pillowcases great for people with dry skin. Especially in the cold winter months when many suffer with this, silk is incredibly beneficial.

The benefits of silk

Do silk pillowcases keep hair healthy?

In some ways, yes. As with the skin, a silk pillowcase also keeps the hair hydrated. This is in contrast to cotton, which is more porous than silk. A regular cotton pillowcase will therefore absorb moisture from your hair, while silk maintains the hair's natural moisture balance. This means that a silk pillowcase is particularly advantageous if you tend to have dry hair or a flaky scalp. Here, a silk pillowcase would be the perfect choice.

Do silk pillowcases prevent facial acne?

Not necessarily. It is true that silk does not absorb as much moisture from the skin compared to cotton and that this can have beneficial effects. However, it cannot be expected to remove either acne or impure skin. If you suffer from skin problems, there are other better alternatives than a silk pillowcase.

Does the silk pillowcase prevent split ends?

Partly true. Silk's smooth texture can prevent tangles and frizz, which can lead to split ends, but it can't repair previous hair damage. Try using a moisturizing and restorative hair treatment instead if you suffer from very split ends. However, the best advice would naturally be to get your ends trimmed regularly.

Anti-aging and silk pillowcases - how are they related?

We are often asked how a silk pillowcase can prevent wrinkles. With the naked eye, the connection can also be difficult to spot. However, it is thus that a silk pillowcase counteracts sleep wrinkles and maintains the skin's natural moisture balance. In combination, these two factors can improve the conditions of the skin. However, a silk pillowcase can never stand alone in the fight against fine lines and wrinkles. This means that you must also invest in the right products and treatments to ensure the most optimal conditions for anti-ageing.
