What is the difference between the cheap and expensive silk?
Why is there such a big price difference for the different types of silk?
It must be recognized that silk is an expensive material. The price is affected by several different factors. We have mentioned some of the different reasons below.
You can see our various silk products here
1. Raw materials
Just as there are different types of cashmere, there are also many types of silk. The price of silk can vary from DKK 50 to DKK 500 per meter of silk material. The price difference depends on how the silk farms produce their silk material. Organic silk often tends to be more expensive, as the cost of producing sustainable silk is generally higher.
2. The luster of the silk
The expensive silk is often associated with the glossy surface of the material. The shine is a result of different colored silk threads being sewn closely together. The combination of the stitching and the light angle on the surface gives the glossy surface that is often associated with silk.
3. Processing of the silk
Expensive silk undergoes a special treatment before it is ready for use. The term for processing the silk is called "sand-washing". Sand-washing is a natural process in connection with clothing textiles. The process makes the fabric more resistant to creases and increases the softness itself.
4. The dyeing process
More expensive dyes fade less and last longer. The cheaper silk materials quickly fade in color compared to the more expensive fabric. Silk dyed with organic dyes does not fade after each wash. You must therefore always choose a product that is colored with natural dyes.
5. Weight (momme)
Momme is a unit of measurement for the weight of the silk fabric. The higher the VAT, the better the quality - and therefore also the higher the price. A 16 mm silk pillowcase contains "less" silk than a 19 mm silk pillowcase. The price for 16 mm is therefore cheaper than 19 mm. The difference in the diameter can be clearly felt, as a 16 inch diameter will be more "rough" on the surface. To get the beneficial effects from a silk pillowcase, the quality must be at least 16 mm.
However, we recommend going all the way up to 19mm, as the quality is significantly better.
Some manufacturers choose to add other substances, such as polyester, to make the price per meter cheaper. But polyester is an incredibly hard fabric, which reduces the soft, natural feel of silk. You must therefore always choose textiles that are 100% silk to get the genuine quality.
6. What must be the silk minimum?
- Silk pillowcases must be 16mm or more
- Silk duvet covers must be 19mm or more
- The silk sheet must be 19 mm or more
At Cillouettes, we sell different types of silk products. Our silk products are always in a minimum of 19 mm. Our silk scrunchies are produced in 22 gauge and sold here.
